Observations of children raised in deprived environments suggest that when opportunities for exercise and movement are impoverished, there is some delay in both cognitive and motor development: as if playing helped a child to think. Such findings led developmental psychologists to question whether extra stimulation or training accelerated the development of children who were not deprived. This idea was tested by experiments like the one in Box 6.3.

Box 6.3. Does extra practice help babies develop?

One of a pair of identical twins was given a lot of early practice at a particular skill, such as crawling. Later, the other twin was given a brief period of practice and the performance of both twins was compared. In general, the twins performed about the same if the least practised one had had even a little practice. For basic motor skills, a little practice later (when the child is physically more mature) can be as good as a lot of practice earlier.
